Tanzania hunting is a top attraction in East Africa. This safari hunting country is where legendary white hunters such as Frederick Courney Selous, Karamojo Bell, Ernest Hemmingway and Robert Ruark became famous. Even modern day safari legends like Danny McCallum, Robin Hurt, Mike Bartlett, Boetie Bothma, Pen DeVries and Gerard Miller are still guiding the finest safaris available in Africa in the prime game areas of this country. Tanzania offers a wide variety of wildlife habitats and big game trophies unmatched by any hunting country in Africa today.
There are several prime hunting destinations in Tanzania from the plains of the Serengeti to the beautiful Masai Mara with its famous warriors, or the huge Selous Game Reserve in the South. Adventure Unlimited clients have access to the most exclusively controlled prime game hunting reserves throughout the country.
Some of the areas we hunt are among Tanzania’s latest declared Game Reserves- Lukwati, Chunya and Piti just to name a few. They are remotely situated in the southwest of Tanzania bordering Lake Rukwa and the well-known Rungwa River. Due to so many inaccessible areas and permanent water it has not been over-utilized, which makes this a premier area where you will get quality animals, dedication and unparalled service at a reasonable price.
Our safari outfitters strict, self-imposed quotas have resulted in remarkable success to date for our clients on Lion, Leopard, Buffalo (the biggest in Africa), Hippo, Croc, Sable, Roan, Eland, Waterbuck, Fringe Eared Oryx, Topi, Thompson’s Gazelle, Gerenuk and many other species of African plains game.
The official hunting season in Tanzania runs from July 1st thru December
Hunting in Tanzania takes place on four types of hunting area- Game Reserves, Forest Reserves, Game Controlled Areas, or Open Areas. There are some 150+ different hunting concessions covering almost 100,000 square miles.
The actual hunting regions can be specified in one of three regions or ecosystems. In the Selous region consists of primarily hunting in and adjacent to the Selous Game Reserve. It has very good populations of cape buffalo, leopard, elephant and other plains game, but is not really regarded as one of the prime areas for lion in Tanzania.
In the north central part of the country lies the Masai area, or Masailand. This area is the image most people conjure up in their minds when they think about classic African hunting. The close proximity to Arusha makes this a popular area for clients seeking some of the rarer species that are found only in this region of Tanzania- Gerenuk, Lesser Kudu, Fringe Eared Oryx, the different Gazelle species, etc. The area also produces very good lion, leopard and cape buffalo in very specific regions with the right professional hunters. Timing and professional hunter are absolutely critical ingredients if you are seeking these dangerous game species in Masailand.
The third area is categorized as Western Tanzania. The hunting blocks in this region produce the best full bag safaris in east Africa. The areas are re-known for being extremely remote (often taking several hours to reach on a charter plane), very large in size, void of any humans or cattle, and producing some of the most exception quality trophy animals in Africa in free range conditions. The names of areas in this block are among those considered the finest hunting grounds in the world like Rungwa, Ruaha, Usangu, Rukwa, Lukwati, and Ugalla. This is in our opinion the finest destination for the ultimate safari if your goals are a really big lion in free range conditions, two or three big cape buffalo, huge leopard, big sable, roan and other species. These region represents the finest safari hunting opportunities we offer anywhere in the world
Tanzania has perhaps the most traditional safari camps in Africa. Almost all of the accommodations consist of the classic, full size canvas tent just like the ones used back in the early 1900’s (although with some new technology). All safari tents have en suite bathrooms attached to the tent. While they might appear somewhat rustic, they are actually some of the most classical and luxurious accommodations to be found anywhere. The experience one has in any Tanzania game camp is one that will be remembered forever.
The safari hunting in Tanzania is principally oriented on tracking and stalking of the game. Vehicles are used to cover the huge reserves, but once game or game sign is seen, hunts progress on foot.
